Do Yourself a Favor: Self-care 101

Do you work a 9-5 job, 5-7 times per week? If yes, self-care is mandatory. I'll be honest, I'm not a pro at it either. Sometimes I don't know when to unplug and unwind - I feel like I'm missing out if I do.  But let's be real, taking 1-2 hours to myself is a reward nothing or anyone can compete with. Now, if you're wondering what exactly self-care is, it’s the process of caring for oneself. Yes, you. Taking care of you. Sounds basic but believe me, many millennials like you and I struggle deeply with it. We have to be intentional, block out time, shut down technology and indulge in self-initiated practices that produce a healthy mind, body and soul.  Blogging is a form of self-care for me, I neglected my love for writing leisurely when I began my career as a PR professional - now I'm back to writing for myself (and you) which I truly enjoy. Your self-care routine doesn't have to be extravagant. It can be as simple as taking the time to dance like no one's watching to your favorite genre of music, or being still and taking in deep breaths. Be clear about your objective and go for it!

Here are a few simple ideas to kick-start your routine:

  • Take a nap - we all need a certain amount of sleep to function properly, take an hour to recharge by catching some Z's.

  • Meditate - take steady, deep breaths for 5 minutes and try your best to clear your mind. Inhale, exhale. Focus on your breath and nothing else.

  • Grab that book you've been meaning to start - pick a book, any book and get lost in it.

The benefits of self-care are endless but primarily includes a healthier you - physically, emotionally and mentally. What happens when we skip self-care? We end up being tired (a lot), disorganized, sensitive, and worse of all - negative and unproductive. No one wants to work alongside someone with these attributes - ever!

Remember, this is not just a one-time thing. It's a lifestyle. I struggle with consistency but I know for sure that when I take steps, I instantly feel renewed, restored and rejuvenated and I want you feel the same!

How do you practice self-care?
