5 Fun Things to do Before Summer Ends

Was summer 2020 really canceled before it started? If you ask me, it just looked a little different this year. With social distancing and mask protocols activated around the country, enjoying what’s still open during the current global pandemic requires some strategy, creativity and stepping out of your comfort zone. I chose to spend my warm days in green outdoor spaces, soaking up the sun while social distancing. If you want to make the most out of the last fdays of summer, here are some ideas with recommendations in the Washington, DC Metro area:

1.    Pick a Park and Have a Picnic

Pick a park, any park! Picnics are all the rave this summer because they are fun, easy, and very photogenic. My favorite part –  most parks have ample amount of space for you to keep six feet away from others. Supplies you’ll need: blanket, bug spray, portable fan, snacks, drinks, good vibes, and FOOD!

DMV Recommendations: Piney Run Park | Lake Artemesia | National Mall (near Washington Monument)

2.    Get Active and Go Hiking

Whether you’re a fitness enthusiast or not, hiking is the perfect activity for those looking to get active. If you’re ready to breathe extra clean oxygen and be one with nature, then throw on your sneakers sis. Most locations have beginner and intermediate trails to accommodate all fitness levels. Pro tip: start your hiking adventure as early as possible to beat the heat and crowds.

DMV Recommendations: Great Falls Park | Cunningham Falls State Park | Liberty Dam

3.    Get on the Water – Kayak or Book a Boat Ride

There’s just something about cruising on water that’s so relaxing and serene. I love kayaking because it blesses me with the chance to connect deeper with nature, something we often take for granted. Yes, kayaking may be a little scary for the first time, but once you get the hang of the basics it’s one of the best experiences ever.  A great alternative to kayaking is booking a local boat/ferry ride.

DMV Recommendations: The Wharf DC | Georgetown Waterfront | Piney Run Park

4.    Embark on a Road Trip

Pack up the mini-van, pick a city nearby, and drive. The best alternative to flying to your next U.S. destination is driving there instead. There are millions of hidden gems on your coast worth exploring. If long road trips aren’t for you, then simply discover what your own city has to offer such as parks, outdoor monuments/memorials, murals, and etc. Reminder: please do your research on COVID-19 guidelines before traveling or visiting an attraction. Protocols may vary from state to state. Follow CDC’s recommendations as well.

5.    See a Drive-In Movie

Tired of binge-watching Netflix and do you miss visiting the movie theaters? Well how about a drive-in theater? Pop-up drive-in movie theaters are the latest trend while regular movie theaters are shut down. If you can’t find one in your area, create one in your backyard with a screen projector!

DMV Recommendations: Park Up DC | The Drive-In at Union Market | Columbia Pike Drive-In

Bonus: Visit a winery or sunflower field near you

DMV recommendations: The Winery at Bull Run | McKee-Beshers Sunflower Field

*** Comply with all CDC and local guidelines for COVID-19 and please wear a mask.
